Sewn-bound books

How to properly create files

In order to create Sewn-Bound Books print files, you will have to create two files.

Letโ€™s start from the cover: once our form has been duly filled in with all your bookโ€™s features (i.e. pages, paper, print colours), you will automatically be able to download the layout, which is ready to be customised using your own graphic designs (either in PDF or InDesign formats).

Binding Guide
Cover with flaps
In case you opt for this kind of book cover, once selected, you will be able to download a customisable template! Bear in mind that the flap that will be created will be half the width of the book. Example: Is the book15x21? The flap is going to be 7.5cm wide.
If you wish to customise it in any way, contact us and we will check together if it can be done!
Blank area for glue

In order to set up the book, it is important to leave a blank area on the second page, which shall be as wide as the spine plus 5mm on the left and 5mm on the right side: moreover, it shall be as high as the book, including bleed. Example: If the spine is 5cm, you will have to leave a 6cm width.

Binding Guide

The file for the interior of the book shall be made of single pages with 5mm bleed.

The multipage templates generated by our website are visualised in InDesign with pages which are not placed side by side. If you need to work with pages placed side by side, you can go on FILE > DOCUMENT SETUP and activate the voice "Facing Pages"

Graphic designs matching between the interior and the book cover

In case images or graphic patterns on the cover and the first page of the interior, or on the last page of the interior and the third page of the cover need to match, you will have to create a 5mm shift between the contents of the cover and the interior โ€“ as shown on the image. This space will then be retrieved during the setting up of the cover and the interior of the book. Warning: it is not technically possible to ensure the perfect matching of images and graphic designs.

In case you have any doubt, do not hesitate to contact us.

Always remember that your file has to comply with the following features that apply to every file:

  • 1:1 scale and 5mm bleed for each side
  • CMYK colour model
  • High-quality PDF
  • Images resolution: 300ppi
  • Always check the internal security margins.
